How was my day? Well, about an hour and a half of it was really fun, and DON’T YOU EVER SAY ANYTHING TO ME ABOUT THE TODAY SHOW EVER AGAIN, but I also watched quite a bit of House of Cards, so that was okay.
Anyway, I’ll be direct tonight.
The four hobbits stay overnight at Frogmorton, then set out the next morning with a whole slew of Shirriffs. Their ride is somewhat comical. People stop and stare, but the four hobbits (technically under arrest) ride behind the Shirriffs. They laugh while the Shirriffs are grim and stone-faced. As they move along, the four hobbits on ponies quicken their pace as to drive the Shirriffs before them. They only stop after a long while around 3:00. The Shirriffs won’t budge another inch, so the four hobbits ride on.
Breaking arrest! Those scoundrels!
-the Three-Farthing Stone: It’s like the Four Corners, but for the Shire, and only for three farthings. The Northfarthing wasn’t invited.
The joke is: who’s arresting who? It certainly doesn’t look like the returning hobbits are in any sort of peril, and it’s the Shirriffs who look unhappy. So many strange things are going on, and they don’t like it. Better buckle up, boys!
In the end, the leader of the Shirriffs seems more concerned with washing his hands of the whole affair. When the hobbits ride off, he complains that he can’t be held accountable for this. I assume that’s to make sure that no one can punish him if things go wrong.
Whoops! They totally went wrong.
No one dies today.
