Something’s rotten in the state of Bree.
I can’t say what it is yet, but the four hobbits and Gandalf are greeted by a suspicious gatekeeper with a club. The walk through town brings many stares, and Butterbur nearly attacks them before he knows who they are.
Things are alright, though, once he sees them, and he starts pulling out all the stops to make them comfortable.
So, what’s up? Well, I don’t know. Through all that happens in the world, Bree usually remains pretty insular. It’s a traveler’s town, no doubt about it, but there isn’t really anything there to get worked up about. It just kind of…exists – much like the Shire, but without the general sense of peace. I get the feeling that no one’s ever truly happy in Bree, but it isn’t the worst place to find yourself.
That being said, something has spooked the residents here.
I have no doubt that we’ll learn about this soon enough. No sense getting worked up over not knowing right now. We are reading this a little slowly, if you’ve forgotten.
No one dies today.
