Well, that chapter title sums things up nicely. We’re getting there.
Today begins inauspiciously enough, with Frodo and Sam hunkering down out of sight of the road. Sam forces Frodo to eat and drink, and the two collapse in weariness. After a rest, Sam wakes to look at Mount Doom and see how far away it is. He despairs to know that, as weak as Frodo is, he will make the journey a long and arduous one. It looks like it might take another week still.
Well, since I was trying to bring events up into line with Aragorn’s march to the Black Gate, it sounds like things are working out! I don’t know if it really will take that long to get to Mount Doom, though. Sam isn’t great with maps and distances, as we’ve learned previously.
Not much else to say. Things are looking bleak, but that’s no real change from any other recent outlook.
What is important, though, is that I get some sleep now. Tomorrow, I finally get to do something I’ve been thinking about for some time: watch all three films in a row. However, I’m not just doing that. My lovely ladyfriend is pairing this with hobbit-style meals found on the internet. We’re having a multi-course meal throughout the day, complete with all your traditional hobbit mealtimes. I can’t wait for Elevenses. See you on the other side!
No one dies today.
“But the bitter truth…”
