Might as well jump.
Yeah, you shouldn’t be surprised that we’re jumping back to Frodo and Sam. Well, in fact, just to Sam. He wakes up outside the tower of Cirith Ungol, having knocked himself cold beating up against the gates. Frodo’s been carried inside, and Sam can hear the orc voices retreating. He has only one option at this point: save Frodo or die. He walks back, hoping to find an entrance to the tower, and thinks of his friends far away. Are they thinking of him?
What follows is a quick whip-around to all of our other heroes and where they are. Aragorn is sailing up Anduin in the corsair ships. Merry is on the ride. Pippin is watching Denethor descend into madness with Minas Tirith aflame. Does that set up where we are? Yeah, time-wise, this is over a week ago from where we left off just yesterday. Just so you know.
And also, this is why it made perfectly good sense to combine the two storylines in the movies. No film could withstand that big of a jump backwards in time. Sync it up!
Don’t forget that this day marks the start of THE LAST BOOK. Blink and we’ll be done.

“But they were far beyond aid, and no thought could yet bring any help to Samwise Hamfast’s son; he was utterly alone.”
