I am not infallible. I admit at times that I may have the wrong idea about the text here. This is one of those times.
Frodo falls asleep. Later on, he wakes again to find himself alone. He feels most good, and gets up to look at himself in the mirror. He’s lost weight! He also finds some nice clothes that are already fitted for him. As he admires himself, Sam knocks and enters the room. He is overjoyed to see Frodo up and about, and has been sent by Gandalf to bring him out. He promises to guide Frodo around the large house.
So, what am I wrong about? Nothing I’ve brought up yet, just something I was planning on talking about. I was planning on showing how the whole “Frodo and Sam are lovers” theory is totally unsupported in the text. I mean, it’s preposterous, right? It’s just got to be people making fun of two dudes on a journey where they end up for the most part only spending time with each other. Any two people would form a tight bond in that situation.
The text kind of…well, throws it right in my face.
Please observe the following quotes from today’s page:
1) As Sam enters – “He ran to Frodo and took his left hand, awkwardly and shyly. He stroked it gently and then he blushed and turned hastily away.”
2) Sam, on Frodo’s hand recovering – “‘It’s warm!’ said Sam. ‘Meaning your hand, Mr. Frodo. It has felt so cold through the long nights.'”
3) Frodo, after Sam mentions not having had much time for merriment lately – “‘I know what you have been doing, Sam,’ said Frodo, taking his arm.”
Take these out of context. There’s no denying that they sound like flirting.
So, there it is. I can’t get up on a soap box and say how the text never makes any sort of reference to Frodo and Sam being…involved. I still don’t think it’s actually true, but now I see where it comes from.
Although I think this is totally different from the fan-made drawings of Elijah Wood and Sean Astin embracing. It exists. I’m not showing you any.
Otherwise, the page is pretty tame. Frodo’s feeling better. Huzzah.
“‘Come on, guide me round the corners!'”
