It’s time for Gandalf to fess up to some things. TELL US WHAT YOU KNOW!
Gandalf has learned much from Frodo talking in his sleep. He knows about the twists and turns of Frodo’s journey so far, and even things that he hasn’t told Sam, Merry, or Pippin. Gandalf, however, is tight-lipped about his own misadventure. He only admits that he was taken captive, and if it weren’t for Aragorn saving the hobbits, all hope would have been lost. He promises that Frodo will learn more in time. A “Council” is being prepared. Gandalf also confirms (for Frodo at least) that the black riders are indeed the nine Ringwraiths, and he only heard about their coming after he had left Frodo.
Gandalf says: “I was delayed.” By what, a train? Way to downplay everything. It’s a common theme how Gandalf (and wizards in general) tend to do and say as they please, on their own time. But seriously, must we be mysterious? Granted, I don’t think he wants to trouble Frodo with disheartening news. So there’s at least some sort of a concern for Frodo’s mental sanity. However, if I were in Frodo’s situation, I would be so fraught with trying to sort everything out that I would want to know as much as I could. I think that’s what he tries to tell Gandalf, but he’s bad at being forceful like that.
In reality, life is pretty great right now. It’s a good thing when you wake up in a bed in Rivendell. I’m sure it would surpass most hotels that you could find, especially any that would force you to walk in the wilderness for two weeks just to get to them. They also don’t tend to be able to heal your mortally dangerous wounds for you upon arrival. This place has perks.
One other thing. Gandalf explains what the black riders really are: “the Nine Servants of the Lord of the Rings.” HEY! That’s the name of our book!
Words My Computer Didn’t Like:
One of the suggested changes for “Morgul-lord” was “Morgue-lord”. Yes, a lord of the morgues. Like Kirsten Dunst in Drop Dead Gorgeous.
“‘I thought, well, that they were just big, and rather stupid: kind and stupid like…'”
