Quick quiz: how many days pass on this page?
None? Okay, then why did I ask? No. One? No…
In case you’re not exactly sure, that means two. The first day, the same one that the hobbits and Aragorn depart from Bree, is quite easygoing. They don’t see anything living save for birds, squirrels, and a fox. They hope that any pursuers will believe that they are headed for Archet. On the second day, they continue through the Chetwood, turning to the east, and things continue to be easy. On the third day, they come out of the woods and into the Midgewater Marshes, where the going is slow due to the boggy lands, and they are constantly at war with small insects.
-the Midgewater Marshes: Swampy flatlands east of the Chetwood, beyond the Bree-land. Midges are said to be more common than water, biting travelers at every opportunity.
Yeah, all of a sudden it’s two days later. Some pages take the space of a few minutes. We had one or two that jumped a few months or years, but after a night in The Prancing Pony taking two full chapters, I didn’t expect two days to pass so quickly. Well, time flies when you’re having fun!
And is it a coincidence that the group comes across a fox on one of their peaceful days? Is it the same fox from before? IS IT STALKING THEM? (Page 72, if you’re curious or don’t remember.) Could it be? One fox…following our heroes. FOREVER.
Okay, probably not, but it’s fun to play games.
Sam asks a question here that doesn’t get answered. “What do they live on when they can’t get hobbit?” he asks about the midges. Good question, Sam. Without any answer given, I’m going to say sugar and rage.
Words My Computer Didn’t Like:
Will the hobbits survive the midge onslaught?
Yes. Yes they will.
“They spent a miserable day in this lonely and unpleasant country.”
