Party time! We’re all about the party preparations on this page. Carts are going up to Bag End. Just when all the other hobbits (because OF COURSE they’re snooping on everything) think that Bilbo should be ashamed for outsourcing everything, orders start coming for everything that can be obtained somewhere in the Shire. Invitations go out, and swamp the post offices in Hobbiton and Bywater. Apparently, we can assume that Bywater is the next town over, and the two get along pretty well. Unlike those Brandybucks!
Everyone gets the invitations, and naturally everyone says yes. This is when Bilbo puts up the wonderful sign on his gate: “NO ADMITTANCE EXCEPT ON PARTY BUSINESS”. He’s inside working all day long. One morning, tents start going up in the field south of the Hill. Everything is so epic that all work basically stops. Even the Gaffer stops gardening. That’s how you know this is for real. A huge kitchen is put in place, and Bilbo hires every cook he can find. They all get to stay at Bag End preparing. (And I’m sure every hobbit around is mostly jealous about that!) On party eve, the weather looks bad, but it picks up the next morning, and the party is ON.
Again, no First Mentions!
We do learn that there are three families that live on Bagshot Row. The first of which is the Gamgee family, and we can assume Daddy Twofoot is there too. (He was referenced as the Gamgee’s next-door neighbor earlier.) Hobbit family #3? A mystery.
Somehow, my computer was fine with every word, so I’m just going to use this time to critique some word-use. The term given to say that the Bywater post office is swamped is that it is “snowed under”. Does this really make any sense? It implies that the post office is literally covered with snow, and I’m pretty sure that’s not what’s going on. I could understand that if it was the winter. (It’s September, remember.) And while being snowed under would certainly halt mail services, it’s a force of nature, and thus unstoppable. Heavy mail load, however, is just being busy. This is snowed under:
I wanna see those hobbits deal with THAT. Heavy mail? Psh.
So, yeah, both of my features here were dead today. That’s just going to make it more momentous when we get a surge of things again! Push on!
“He gave away presents to all and sundry – the latter…”
